Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Tuesday that it will establish a 3DIC material research and development center in Japan.
TSMC said the plan to establish the R&D center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo, through investment of up to US$186 million in paid-in capital to set up a 100 percent owned subsidiary in Japan, was approved at a board meeting held Tuesday afternoon.
The investment aims to expand the chipmaker's efforts in 3DIC material development and reinforce cooperation with Japanese counterparts in the field, TSMC said.
The investment plan is scheduled to be completed later this year, according to TSMC, but no further details were disclosed.
