Japan proposes $1.3bn investment in Rapidus

asia.nikkei.com, Nov. 20, 2024 –

The Japanese government plans to take a 200 billion yen ($1.29 billion) stake in chipmaker Rapidus in fiscal 2025, Nikkei has learned, seeking to spur private-sector investment and financing in the national push to produce cutting-edge chips.

The move comes on top of 920 billion yen in subsidies the government previously agreed to provide Rapidus as the Japanese company prepares to begin mass production in 2027. The new draft proposal was presented to ruling party lawmakers by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
