Belgian research lab imec is setting up a research lab in the US to boost research into driverless cars and electric vehicles.

The Semiconductor Talent and Automotive Research (STAR) initiative with US equipment maker KLA and car maker General Motors aims to boost the talent base and infrastructure necessary to accelerate advanced semiconductor applications for electrification and autonomous mobility. The two have worked together for over 25 years.

A centre of excellence (COE) will be set up in Michigan to formalize support for the development of the semiconductor industry workforce and a physical collaboration space, laboratory and training spaces as well as incubator funding for related startups.
As well as GM, founding partners include the University of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
This follows Infineon setting up a lab for the development of driverless car technologies in Taiwan with Foxconn.
