TSMC's US Triumph Over Samsung: Production Begins Ahead of Schedule
TSMC has achieved a significant milestone in the US semiconductor market, launching full-scale production at its US fabrication facility. This advance places TSMC ahead of Samsung, which has struggled to meet its own deadlines.
TSMC's Production Launch
According to BusinessKorea, TSMC has commenced full-scale production of mobile semiconductors at its Arizona facility, starting months ahead of its original schedule. The company has already secured clients, marking a crucial step in its operational strategy.
Notably, TSMC has successfully produced a 4nm A16 processor for Apple's iPhone at this facility. This processor is expected to be utilized in the upcoming iPhone SE 4, tentatively slated for release in early 2025.
Samsung's Struggles
In contrast, Samsung has faced challenges in its efforts to catch up with TSMC in the US market. The timeline for the startup of its Taylor plant has been pushed back from late 2024 to early 2025, primarily due to various legal and administrative hurdles.
Future Plans for TSMC
TSMC's ambitious plans include expanding its number of fabs to six by 2030, with two facilities currently under construction in Arizona. This growth strategy positions TSMC as a dominant force in the foundry market, further complicating the competitive landscape for Samsung and Intel.
Industry Insights
A foundry industry insider remarked, "TSMC is dominating the foundry market while Samsung and Intel are struggling." The urgency for Samsung to finalize the timing of subsidies in coordination with the U.S. government is critical to closing the market share gap with TSMC.
